Seminar Details Charities and third sector organisations undertake important public services and have an important place in society. Their activities engage a number of legal areas. In this seminar we will look at current issues including:
• The rise of the Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation… and the end of the trust? How are modern charities established?
• “Targeted Regulation”- new regulatory framework on the horizon from OSCR- what will it entail?
• Charities that campaign: lobbying obligations and restrictions- the latest.
• Legal locksmiths: attaching conditions to charitable gifts and bequests and how to unlock outmoded and historic conditions
• Charities FAQs: essential good governance points; trustees; members; commercial activities; key charity tax points; sports clubs; ALEOs… and more.

Alan is a Partner in the private client department of Brodies LLP. Much of Alan's practice involves advising on charity law. He has been heavily involved in early developments in charity law such as Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisations (SCIOs), reorganisations and mergers. Legal directories have noted that Alan "continues to receive acclaim for his superb charity law advice" and that he has a "deep knowledge of the field". He currently lectures at the University of Strathclyde in trusts and charities. Alan was a member of the Council of the Law Society of Scotland from 2007 to 2009 and the Society's Education and Training Committee from 2007 to 2012. He is currently a member of the Society's Charity Law and Mental Health and Disability Law Committees.
