Seminar Details 2010 saw a raft of changes in charity law including changes to the definition of a "charity" for tax purposes and amendments to the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005. 2011 is likely to be no different with the anticipated introduction of the Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation amongst other changes. As well as important changes in charity law, the seminar will also consider private client issues associated with charity law as well as a more general review of current issues in trusts, succession and incapacity law with their related tax points. Thorny issues such as contentious trust/ executry matters (including cohabitant claims and their outcomes in practice) will also be covered.
Alan Eccles is an associate with Maclay Murray & Spens LLP. Alan advises a range of charities from national institutions to private foundations as well as advising individuals and corporate entities on charitable activities. As well as charity law, Alan advises on trusts, succession and incapacity law and is a lecturer in charities, trusts and succession at the University of Strathclyde and is also a member of the Law Society's Mental Health and Disability Law Committee. Previously, he was a member of the legal staff at the Scottish Law Commission.)
