The MLRO’s Challenge – Keeping your firm AML Compliant without giving up the day job
Date 27/02/2014
Speaker Graham Gibson (Partner, Kirklands)
Seminar Details This Workshop is designed to facilitate discussion amongst MLROs from the Glasgow area about the AML Challenge that MLRO’s face and the solutions that have worked for their firm.

The role of MLRO is already the most onerous (and career threatening) job any solicitor can take on. The Bad news for MLROs is that 2014 will see our Law Society (LSS) raise the bar on what it views as acceptable AML Compliance. This is driven by impending changes in EU and UK regulations that are already viewed as “Best AML Practice” by most Regulators in the UK.

The Good news is the LSS have, through their Accounts Certificates, Inspection Feedback and Roadshows, set out the AML processes and procedures they expect firms to have in place.

In the 1st half we will go through the Timeline of a transaction identifying the key points where MLROs must ensure that AML checks are carried out and documented. In advance of the Workshop the Royal Faculty will invite you to submit topics for discussion and we will discuss these at the appropriate point in the Timeline.

In the 2nd half we will focus on how MLROs in firms of various sizes have risen to their MLRO Challenge. We will look at models we have seen work in micro, medium and large firms and invite you to share what you have found works well and the areas that suck up most of your time.

This Workshop is designed for newly appointed and experienced MLROs who have taken on the task of protecting their firm against regulatory breaches and fraudsters but still want/need to be a fee earner. You should also invite your MLRO Assistants and any colleague who you feel would benefit from knowing more about what is involved in the role of MLRO.
